Organic Farms Profile

How big is an average organic California farm? What do organic farmers raise? Do they prefer chicken over cow manure? These and other questions are being answered by researchers analyzing a massive storehouse of information compiled by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), one of the largest organic certification organizations in North America. An analysis of the CCOF database is being funded by the UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program and other funding institutions. CCOF annually documents and inspects every farm seeking certification through its organization. "We want to answer the question: 'How are organic farmers doing it?', with a moderate level of detail regarding the variables that are important to other farmers -- such as farm size and crop type," says Brian Baker, one of the CCOF researchers.
