Open letter to the campus community

Balancing public safety and privacy concerns

UC Davis is committed to providing a safe environment for all members of our campus community. The police actions that took place in Dutton Hall and the Mathematical Sciences Building on Thursday, Jan. 18, in response to a possible armed individual, are examples of the campus responding quickly to events that have the potential to endanger those who work and study here.

Fortunately, the situation was resolved with no physical injury to anyone. The episode was a very complex circumstance involving conflicting reports to police, and the campus recognizes the serious issues that have been raised as a result.

We understand that a situation like this causes apprehension and concern. The campus administration shares those concerns and is following up on all complaints received and taking appropriate investigatory measures. The matter involves carefully balancing public safety, the concerns of the campus community and the privacy of the individuals involved.

Be assured that we have taken this situation very seriously and continue to do so.
