Mythbusters: Jamie Hyneman, left, and Adam Savage

The Discovery Channel's MythBusters team is headed to UC Davis to tell the truth about busting science myths or proving them right.

In a program set for Nov. 10 at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage plan to take their audience behind the scenes of their weekly cable show, play some video and answer questions.

The MythBusters cable show answers such questions as whether a cup of water can explode in a microwave, during the process of bringing the water to a boil. (The answer is yes, under "a specific set of circumstances," according to the MythBusters Web site.)

Savage and Hyneman do more than explain how something may or may not be scientifically possible. Through trial and error, they actually demonstrate it. And, because Hyneman and Savage are special-effects experts, the demonstrations are dramatic.

During appearances like the one at the Mondavi Center, they talk about the making of the cable show, including examples of experiments that went wrong.

"It is a funny, entertaining and enlightening evening for fans of MythBusters, fans of science and those who delight in Adam and Jamie's uniquely twisted and ingenious sense of curiosity," said Bruce Granath, a partner in Salt Lake City-based NewSpace Entertainment, which is presenting the MythBusters event at the Mondavi Center.

The question-and-answer session can be both funny and serious, Granath said. During a show in Salt Lake City, a middle school science teacher asked Savage and Hyneman how they approached the scientific process in each experiment.

"They did a great job explaining all the steps, starting with small-scale ideas and working them up to full scale," Granath said.

The MythBusters program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Mondavi Center's Jackson Hall.
