NEWS BRIEFS: Top rankings in the Peace Corps, again

With 60 alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers, UC Davis maintained its top-5 ranking among large California colleges and universities and top-25 ranking in the nation.

The rankings are calculated on data for the federal government’s fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2012, and include only those volunteers who self-reported their alma maters.

UC Davis maintained its fifth-place spot in California and moved up to a tie for 17th in the nation, even though the volunteer count declined from 63.

Still, UC Davis has been ranked in the top 25 of the nation’s large universities for 11 consecutive years, and ranks 16th on the list of all-time top-producing schools.

Olive Center director talks with Dr. Oz

UC Davis research on olive oil quality will be part of the discussion Monday (Feb. 11) when The Dr. Oz television show takes on "food fraud" — when a product's actual content differs from what's on the label.

Dan Flynn, executive director of the Olive Center, went to New York City last month to join physician Mehmet Oz for the videotaping of an episide titled "Counterfeit Foods: Buyer Beware!"

Olive Center research has shown that much of the imported olive oil sold at retail stores and wholesale to restaurants is below the standard advertised on the labels. The center recently launched a testing program whereby retailers and wholesalers can ensure the quality of olive oil made available to consumers.

Sacramento's KCRA-TV Channel 3 presents The Dr. Oz Show at 4 p.m.

Dell Computer settlement

The campus counsel’s office is offering to help UC Davis departments in getting what they may be owed from settlements in two lawsuits against Dell Computer Corp.

The settlements provide refunds for incorrectly paid sales or use taxes on the purchase of certain computer hardware service contracts sold by Dell from April 8, 1999, to June 30, 2008.

Settlement notices recently went out to customers who may be eligible for refunds, based on Dell’s sales records.

Class members in Mohan, et al. v. Dell Inc., et al. Class Action (case Nos. CGC 03-419192 and CJC-05-00442), heard in San Francisco Superior Court, must file claims electronically on or before May 29, 2013; each notice provides an individual password, claim number and precalculated tax overpayment.

UC officials said some of the refund amounts are quite small, and the process of filing a claim electronically can be cumbersome for people unfamiliar with the website. Therefore, UC Davis departments are welcome to forward their notices for processing by the campus counsel’s office. Refunds would then be sent to the address on each notice.

Deliver notices to the Office of the Campus Counsel, 230 Mrak Hall, or send as a PDF by email to Lynette Temple, director of legal affairs, lstemple@ucdavis.edu

She Shares invites chancellor

A conversation with Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi will launch the second season of She Shares at a luncheon scheduled for Friday, March 1, in downtown Sacramento.

Organizers from the Dewey Square Group say the series highlights female trailblazers, who, through their leadership, have created a lasting impact on women in California and beyond.

Karen Breslau, principal of the Dewey Square Group and a former correspondent for Newsweek, will moderate the conversation.

Two UC Davis students have been invited to attend as part of a mentoring program supported by ticket sales.

Tickets are $50 each and can be ordered online.

'Mrak Gives Back': 120 pounds of food

The “Mrak Gives Back” food drive recently netted two big moving boxes full of tuna and peanut butter and cereal and canned stew and lots more, about 120 pounds in all for The Pantry, the campus’s year-old food bank for students who may be skipping meals for financial reasons.

The donations came from people who work in Mrak Hall. The student assistants to the chancellor and the Office of Student Affairs organized the two-week drive, held in January, and they are hoping other buildings and departments will hold their own drives for the Pantry.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter recently joined the student assistants to the chancellor in presenting the food to student workers from The Pantry.
