American History TV this weekend presents an actual UC Davis lecture: “Alcohol Use in the Early American Republic,” by the Pulitzer Prize-winning Alan Taylor.
The professor's students appear, too, as they interact with him during the lecture filmed in March. At the time, Taylor had one Pulitzer, given in 1996 for his book William Cooper’s Town: Power and Persuasion on the Frontier of the Early American Republic. Then, in April of this year, he won Pulitzer No. 2, for The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832.
The American History TV program is scheduled to debut at 5 p.m. PDT Saturday (June 14), and a repeat presentation is scheduled for 9 p.m. American History TV is carried on C-SPAN3.
American History TV gives this synopsis: “By 1830, annual alcohol consumption in America reached 4 gallons per person, the most in the history of the nation before or since. In this class, University of California, Davis, Professor Alan Taylor discusses why Americans drank so much in the early Republic. He also talks about the consequences of so much drinking, and how it spawned the temperance movement in the 1830s.”
A spokesman for American History TV said the Taylor program should be available online by Monday (June 16).
All admissions advising moves to Welcome Center
Undergraduate Admissions announced that it is relocating all of its advising services to the Welcome Center, effective July 1.
The center, run by the admissions office, opened last September — and advisers have been available there since then, for prospective and continuing students.
But Undergraduate Admission also maintained advising services at the main admissions office on the first floor of Mrak Hall. That’s why there’s a reception counter in the Mrak lobby.
But, as of July 1, that counter will be closed permanently, in a move by Undergraduate Admissions to streamline its operations, Associate Vice Chancellor Walter Robinson said. “Undergraduate Admissions anticipates a smooth transition as we continue to provide excellent service to our students and visitors from the Welcome Center.”
So, if you’re working with or come across a prospective student who needs admission advice, please direct them to the Welcome Center. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends, except on campus holidays.
A drop box will be provided outside 178 Mrak Hall for students who wish to drop off transcripts or other documents.
Limited library services and-or closures, June 13-15
The Physical Sciences and Engineering Library will be closed and services will be limited at Shields Library, this Friday (June 13). Both libraries will closed Saturday and Sunday (June 14-15).
On Friday, Shields will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but circulation and reserves will be closed for a staff retreat. Shields Library’s regular intersession hours will resume Monday (June 16).

‘One’ HR runner’s Sacramento-to-Davis time: 3:34
Last week we told you about Scott Yates’ plan to run from the Sacramento campus HR office to the Davis campus HR office to show how they are closer together than people may realize and connected under the new banner “One HR Community,” inspired by One UC Davis.
Well, he did it! In 3:34 last Thursday morning (June 4).
“Kinda slow,” he said. “I don’t normally take pictures, reply to texts and post to Facebook and Twitter when I run!” He also took a 1.5-mile detour to the "Good Day Sacramento" studio in West Sacramento for an appearance on morning TV.
He emailed Dateline UC Davis at about 10:30 a.m.: “I made it. Been at the office for about 45 minutes. ... Now I’m hungry.”
Staff adviser designate appointed
As Donna Coyne of UC Santa Barbara moves up to staff adviser to the Board of Regents, for a one-year term starting July 1, Deidre “De” Acker of UC Merced moves in behind her as staff adviser designate.
UC President Janet Napolitano announced Acker’s selection last week, after a systemwide search.
The staff adviser selection process always runs two years in advance. Acker will serve alongside Coyne for a year, just as Coyne served as staff adviser designate alongside Kathy Barton of UC Riverside for a year. Now, Barton’s term as staff adviser is coming to an end June 30, and Coyne moves up.
Coyne is associate director of admissions at Santa Barbara. Acker has been a UC employee for more than 25 years, first at Santa Barbara (her alma mater) and now at Merced, where she has been the ombuds since 2012.
“I’m very interested in improving climate for staff,” Acker said. “Having worked on two campuses, in three divisions and as a student employee, I’ve seen a lot. I’m very interested in creating and supporting inclusive environments for our increasingly diverse population.”
