Search committee expects to name new UC president in July

The search committee tasked with selecting a new president for the University of California is anticipating announcing a successor to Mark Yudof in July, according to Sherry Lansing, chair of the UC Board of Regents and leader of the Special Committee to Consider the Selection of a President.

Yudof, who is stepping down as president on Aug. 31, plans to return to teaching. He is an expert in constitutional law.

“While we are working on a tight deadline, we are all confident that we will find another outstanding and compassionate leader to guide our great university into the future,” Lansing wrote in a message this week.

The search committee, which includes Gov. Jerry Brown, an ex officio member of the regents, also includes: Regent Bruce Varner, who serves as the vice chair of the committee; Regent Richard Blum; Regent Russell Gould; Regent George Keiffer; Regent Bonnie Reiss; Regent Fred Ruiz; Student Regent Jonathan Stein; and Alumni Regent Ronald Rubenstein.  Isaacson, Miller, a national search firm with extensive experience in higher education leadership recruitment, has been retained.

In addition, an Academic Advisory Committee, headed by UC Davis’ Robert Powell, current chair of the UC Academic Senate, has been appointed to assist the search committee. Student, staff, and alumni advisory committees have also made recommendations on selection criteria.

School of Law announces new postgraduate fellows program

To assist recent graduates in a challenging legal job market and provide needed legal services to the community, UC Davis School of Law is launching a new postgraduate fellowship program, offering jobs off and on campus.

The program will offer one-year paid positions to class of 2013 UC Davis law graduates. The new positions complement fellowships and research assistant jobs already offered at the law school.

“These new fellowships are a welcome and necessary step in assisting our graduates," said Kevin R. Johnson, dean of the UC Davis School of Law.

"Collaboration with the UC Davis campus and other organizations is critical to supporting these future lawyers in a time when job opportunities are limited and legal needs are great,” he said.

Two positions for 2013 law graduates will be available in the UC Davis Office of the Campus Counsel, for example. Another position will be made available in the campus’s Internal Audit Services office.
