The campus community is mourning the death of retired Vice Chancellor Richard E. Matheny, who led UC Davis fund raising, alumni relations, government and community relations, and communications from 1988 to 1997.
Matheny, 72, died Sept. 7 at a retirement home in Seattle, of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He had been diagnosed with the disease while working at UC Davis.
“Rich Matheny was absolutely instrumental in the early formation of the office of University Relations,” said Chancellor Emeritus Larry N. Vanderhoef, who was provost and executive vice chancellor when Matheny came to UC Davis and would become chancellor in 1994.
“His gentle demeanor hid, for some, his well-studied, straight-ahead intentions of where the campus was headed, and what University Relations’ role had to be in that journey,” Vanderhoef said. “He made a real difference at UC Davis.”
9 Billion Mouths to Feed: Episode 3
"Keeping it Green," the third episode in the UC Davis-produced, four-part documentary, "9 Billion Mouths to Feed: The Future of Farming," is scheduled to debut Tuesday (Nov. 6) on UC's YouTube channel, UCTV Prime. The video will also be available on the UC Davis home page, where the second episode, "Field to Fork," is now posted.
Causeway Classic Blood Drive Nov. 13-14
The Aggies are once again vying for two Causeway Classic trophies: one for football and one for getting the most people to turn out for a blood drive in the weeks or days leading up to the game.
California State University, Sacramento, ran its blood drive Oct. 23 and 24, registering 1,762 prospective donors.
The Aggies get their turn Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 13 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days on the second floor of The Pavilion at the ARC. Can’t make it then? You can help the Aggie cause by donating at any BloodSource location through Nov. 14.
The Causeway Classic Blood Drive is in its fifth year. UC Davis had not lost until last year when the Hornets registered 22 more people than the Aggies. The final tally: 1,800 for Sac State, 1,778 for UC Davis.
Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and be generally healthy. The minimum age is 17 and there is no maximum. Drink plenty of fluids before donating, and bring a photo ID.

Chemistry professor to present Science Café
Wine, medical imaging and airport security: What do they have in common? Come find out next week during a Science Café event with chemistry professor Matt Augustine.
Some years ago, Augustine began experimenting with magnetic resonance scanning to check bottles of wine for spoilage without opening them. This led to his invention and patenting of technology to scan for explosives in bottles and cans — again, without opening them.
The Science Café, sponsored by the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 7) at the Crepeville restaurant, 330 Third St., Davis.
Mail Services runs 7th annual food drive
The men and women who deliver and pick up your mail are looking for something special in or around your outgoing mailboxes for the next two weeks: donations for a holiday food drive. Mail Services has been running the food drive for seven years now on the Davis and Sacramento campuses.
This year's drive began Nov. 1 and continues until Friday, Nov. 16. Davis campus donations will go to the Food Bank of Yolo County, and Sacramento donations to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.
Mail Services offers the following suggestions for food donations: canned, ready-to-eat meals; canned vegetables and tomato products, canned fruit (in juice); peanut butter (plastic container); iron-rich cereal (45 percent or more of the daily value); powdered milk; fruit juice (100 percent, in plastic containers 48 ounces or smaller); ramen; boxed macaroni and cheese; and powdered milk formula and Similac baby food.

Open enrollment began Oct. 29 and continues until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20.
This is the time set aside each year to enroll in or opt out of UC-sponsored medical, dental and vision plans; transfer to different medical and dental plans; add eligible family members to your medical, dental, vision and legal plans; opt in or out of TIP (tax savings on insurance premiums); and enroll or re-enroll in the health and dependent care flexible spending accounts.
This year also brings the opportunity to enroll in the UC-sponsored legal plan (enrollment in this plan is not open every year).
If you are not making any changes to your coverage, you need not do anything during open enrollment — with one exception: If you have a health or dependent care flexible spending account, and you wish to re-enroll, you must take action during open enrollment. Re-enrollment is not automatic.
