NEWS BRIEFS: Preview Day, labor deals, e-waste, Farm to College Night

Preview Day

Homecoming 2011 isn’t just about our alumni coming home. This year we will also host thousands of people whom we hope will call UC Davis home in the future.

The prospective students and their parents are coming for Preview Day, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. The homecoming football game (against the University of Texas, San Antonio) is scheduled the same day, with kickoff at 2 p.m.

Preview Day visitors are being advised to use the north entry parking garage. Overflow parking will be in Lot 25 in front of the Activities and Recreation Center.

3 labor units say ‘yes’ to new deals

Three bargaining units within two unions have ratified labor agreements with UC, the Office of the President announced Oct. 10.

  • American Federation of Teachers, representing the university's more than 350 librarians.
  • American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, representing more than 20,000 employees at campuses and medical centers, in two bargaining units, one for patient care staff (such as hospital assistants and hospital laboratory technicians) and the other for service workers (such as custodians and mail processors).

UCOP announced last week that it had reached tentative deals with two AFT units: the librarians in one and more than 3,000 lecturers in the other. The result of the lecturers ratification vote was not yet available.

Free e-waste collection

The Bargain Barn is once again offering to take e-waste off your hands for free. But take note: This e-waste collection will not be at the Bargain Barn.

The collection, for university units only, is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 19) at the Hopkins Services Complex, 615 Hopkins Road, across from the University Airport.

The Bargain Barn will take all university-owned, nonfunctioning desktop (or smaller) electronic items. The e-waste will be turned over to the campus’s contracted vendor, California Electronic Asset Recovery, for environmentally safe disposal.

The Bargain Barn will not accept items with UC Davis property stickers, or items that require decommissioning or contain hazardous chemicals.

E-waste guidelines. For more information, contact the Bargain Barn, (530) 752-2145 or bargainbarn@ucdavis.edu.

The Bargain Barn plans to close at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 to get ready for the e-waste collection. Directions to the Hopkins Services Complex: Take Hutchison Drive west from Highway 113, turn left on Hopkins Road and right on Apiary Drive. Turn left at the second driveway.

Farm to College Night

Choices, so many good choices are on the menu for Farm to College Night, Wednesday (Oct. 19) — held in the dining commons and open to everyone, not just students.

Dining Services presents Farm to College Night twice a year, demonstrating the university’s efforts toward building more sustainable food operations. For example, several aspects of the Farm to College Night menu feature sustainably produced, locally grown and humanely raised items.

Here are some of the choices from the Oct. 19 menu: Entrees — Roasted Butternut Squash and Coco Ranch Apple Soup, and Fresh Pasta with Russell Ranch Roasted Tomato Sauce. Sides — Sweet Potato Wedges and Sautéed Dwelley Green Beans with Almonds. Dessert — Fresh Coco Ranch Apple Gallette and Spice Pumpkin Cake with Pecan Streusel.

Farm to College Night hours are 4:45 to 8 p.m. at the Segundo, Tercero and Cuarto dining commons. The cost is $14.50 for the general public, or $11.60 with UC Davis identification or Staff Assembly pin.

Anthropology open house

The Department of Anthropology announced that it will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in honor of California Archaeology Month.

A flier states: “Come and celebrate 40-plus years of archaeological research at UC Davis!” The celebration will take place on the third floor of Young Hall.

The department invites the public to meet archaeology faculty and students, and learn about research and teaching materials. The program also includes lab tours.
