NEWS BRIEFS: Firefighters plan stair climb in Sept. 11 tribute

The campus Fire Department is once again remembering its brethren who made the ultimate sacrifice in the collapse of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attack 11 years ago next Tuesday (Sept. 11).

The FDNY lost 343 firefighters that day — many of them as they climbed the stairs to fight the fire and to rescue people.

In paying tribute, campus firefighters climb the stairs of the west entry parking garage, while wearing their heavy, protective gear.

Chief Nate Trauernicht said Tuesday’s event will begin at 8:45 a.m. (the time of the first plane crash) and continue until 9:58, when the first of the two towers started to fall.

Google launches UC Davis Street View

Pegman

Almost three weeks ago, UC Davis unveiled its virtual tour — featuring photos from the perspective of someone taking a walk. There’s even an inset map, showing where you are at any particular time.

This week, Google posted additional 360-degree imagery of campus streets and paths in the Street View feature of Google Maps.

The Google Maps crew worked with UC Davis to visit the campus and collect the images in November 2010. You can see them as part of the Google Map that UC Davis uses for its online campus map (use this link or click to it from the home page).

To see the imagery via Street View, click on the Pegman icon atop the magnification scale; drag Pegman to any location that is highlighted in blue — and, then, you and Pegman will have the same view.

The UC Davis panoramic imagery went live on Sept. 6 — the same day Google Maps unveiled new street-level imagery for more than 150 universities around the world.

For most panoramic imagery in Google Maps, the Google team uses a camera-equipped car. For campus views, Google mounts its camera system on a three-wheel pedicab — an adult-sized tricycle, allowing the crew to capture images along paths and other places where cars can’t go — places at UC Davis like the arboretum, the Mrak Mall and even the Aggie Stadium field.

UC Davis Extension to honor partners and faculty

UC Davis Extension’s biennial Partner and Faculty Appreciation Reception is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 12) at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.

The program, starting at 6:15 p.m., includes brief remarks by Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter on the value of lifelong learning and the importance of the university’s engagement with the larger community.

The organizers said light refreshments will be served.
