New museum as campus icon: comments welcome

Three design teams, the finalists in a university competition, have imagined the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. Now it’s your turn.

The competition gained steam when the design-build teams presented their proposals at a public forum held the night of April 3 at the UC Davis Conference Center. More than 200 people attended.

The teams showed their designs from every angle — from the street, railroad tracks, bike paths and freeways.

The discussion revolved around the question: Which of these buildings will be the next campus icon?

Drawings and models are now on display at the Nelson Gallery. Design Deliberation: An Exhibition of Three Competing Museum Designs is scheduled to run through May 19.

Meanwhile, “likes” and comments are rolling in via Facebook, on this album page.

The designs are now in the hands of a judging panel, and the university hopes to pick the winner by mid-May. Groundbreaking is expected next year.
