March 2, Friday -- The legacy of colonialism in today's world will be explored during a law symposium at UC Davis. "The Evolution of Colonialism in a Global Economy," presented by the UC Davis Journal of International Law and Policy, marks the 60th anniversary of Indian and Pakistani independence from British rule with an examination of the different ways powerful states today build empires. Participants will delve into the problems arising from current occupations of territory by foreign powers, including the ethical obligations of the occupiers. They also will examine ways in which colonialism has taken up new forms in areas ranging from intellectual property to economic dominance.
