National dean/VC search set

A recruitment advisory committee has been appointed to assist with the national search for the new position of vice chancellor for human health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine.

This vice chancellor/dean post will replace the existing position of dean of the medical school and add supervisory responsibility for the medical center director position-- a management model that is becoming the most prevalent among academic medical centers.

Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw will co-chair the committee. Eugene Bauer and Warren Ross of Korn/Ferry International will assist the campus with the search. Bauer is former dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine and vice president of its medical center, and Ross served as dean of Drexel University's School of Medicine.

"Our first and most important task is to develop a strong, diverse pool of candidates," said Vanderhoef and Hinshaw in a recent letter to UC Davis Health System faculty and staff. "The outcome of a search can only be as good as the pool it generates, and your active involvement, in addition to the hard work of the recruitment advisory committee and our consultants, will ensure that we have a strong pool of candidates from which to choose."

Nominations may be sent to the chancellor or provost or to the consultants. A copy of the position announcement and prospectus, and contact information for Bauer and Ross, can be found at http://chancellor.ucdavis.edu/ by linking to "Executive Recruitments."

Other committee members include: Betsy Bencken, chief administrative officer, anesthesiology and pain medicine; Robert Chason, chief executive officer of the UC Davis Medical Center; Satya Dandekar, chair, microbiology and immunology; Ralph deVere White, chair of urology and director of the Cancer Center; M. Eric Gershwin, division chief, rheumatology/allergy; James Goodnight Jr., chair, surgery; Lydia Howell, associate dean of academic affairs, and professor of pathology; Kit Lam, professor and chair, hematology and oncology; Enrique Lavernia, dean, College of Engineering; Rini Nandi, third-year medical student; Carol Robinson, senior associate director, Patient Care Services; alumna Denise Satterfield; Frank Washington, member, School of Medicine Board of Visitors, and chair and chief executive officer of Moon Shot Communications.

Associate Chancellor Sally Springer serves as a senior staff member to the committee.

School of Medicine Dean Joseph Silva announced in February his intention to step down from his administrative post no later than June 2005.
