Names chosen for 5 more buildings at the Colleges at La Rue complex; nominations sought for Tercero

Five more buildings at the Colleges at La Rue apartments will soon get names, continuing the university’s tradition of naming new student residential facilities after faculty and staff who have made outstanding contributions to undergraduate education at UC Davis.

Also, nominations are being taken for names to be attached to three residence halls in the Tercero complex. These halls are not yet built.

Already nominated and recently approved are these names for existing structures at the Colleges at La Rue: Fred Costello, Yvonne Marsh, Eldridge Moores, Gary Perkins and the late Evelyn Silvia. Student Housing plans to make the names official at a ceremony in April or May.

Nominees must be retired (for at least two years), or have died at least two years ago, at the time of nomination.

Costello worked in Student Housing, Marsh in Enrollment Services and Perkins in Student Affairs. Moores is a professor emeritus of geology and Silvia was a math professor until her death in 2006.

The naming process for residential buildings began in 2000 with the opening of the Colleges at La Rue. The complex on La Rue Road comprises 197 one- to four-bedroom apartments, with a total of 457 bedrooms. The population averages 550 to 600 students per year.

Since 2000, the university has named the complex’s five courts, 16 apartment buildings in four of those courts, plus the community center and the main office building. Costello, one of the latest honorees, is the name chosen for the office building, while the names of Marsh, Perkins, Moores and Silvia are going on the four apartment buildings in the Robert Matthews Court.

In 2004, the university extended the naming process to the campus’s newest residence halls, in the Segundo and Tercero complexes.

Construction of the new Tercero buildings is scheduled to begin in the spring, with occupancy planned in the fall of 2010. The three new halls, each four stories tall, will accommodate a total of 600 bed spaces.

Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef said suggested names for the new buildings are welcome from the Academic Senate, Academic Federation, Staff Assembly, and the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors.

Nominations are due by Feb. 2; they should be directed to the chancellor, lnvanderhoef.edu. For more information, contact Undergraduate Studies Vice Provost Pat Turner, paturner@ucdavis.edu, or call (530) 752-6068.
