ORCHESTRA, CONCERT BAND AND CHORUS

UC Davis concertgoers have two opportunities in the next two weeks to hear Beethoven’s Gloria from Missa solemnis, as performed by the Symphony Orchestra and University Chorus. The first performance is planned during the orchestra’s Nov. 23 concert, the second during a Dec. 5 choral event. Sandwiched in between is the University Concert Band’s fall concert. Here are the details:

Nov. 23—UC Davis Symphony Orchestra’s Golden Jubilee Gala concert, 8 p.m., Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center. Program: Chausson’s Poème for violin and orchestra, featuring Jorja Fleezanis; Brahms’ Symphony No. 4; and Beethoven’s Gloria from Missa solemnis, featuring the orchestra, University Chorus and Alumni Chorus.

Dec. 3—University Concert Band: Dreams and Visions. A concert of modern, imaginative works for band, including Frank Ticheli’s Vesuvius and Luigi Zaninelli’s Roma Sacra. 7 p.m., Jackson Hall.

Dec. 5—University Chorus, with the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra. Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G major and Beethoven’s Gloria from Missa solemnis. 8 p.m., Jackson Hall.

SYMPOSIUM AND LECTURE

The UC Davis Symphony Orchestra's Golden Jubilee Gala is under way, with the  50th anniversary concert set for Nov. 23 and a free symposium two days before and a free lecture the day after.

The Department of Music announced that David Cairns, the Samuel Johnson Prize-winning author of Berlioz: The Making of an Artist 1803-1832 and Berlioz: Servitude and Greatness 1832-1869, will deliver the Nov. 24 lecture, "Humor in Music," and participate in the Nov. 21 symposium, Perspectives on the Philharmonic Society.

Here are the details:

Nov. 21—Symposium: Perspectives on the Philharmonic Society, with Cairns; D. Kern Holoman, professor and orchestra director; Hugh Macdonald; and Michael Steinberg. 4-6 p.m., lobby, Mondavi Center.

Nov. 24—Lecture: “Humor in Music.” 1:10 p.m. 115 Music Building.
