Two weeks into January seems like a good time to ask: How are you doing on those New Year’s resolutions? Don’t have any? Then how about joining other people in the UC Davis community in this year’s Mind Body Wellness Challenge?
Registration is open through Jan. 20, and the challenge runs from Jan. 21 to March 11. There is no charge.
The Retiree Center runs the challenge, but it is for everyone, not just retirees. The co-sponsors: Campus Recreation, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (part of UC Davis Extension), Staff Development and Professional Services, Staff Assembly, Safety Services, and WorkLife.
Here is how the challenge works: Simply commit to adopting one new healthy habit and maintaining it for seven weeks. “After seven weeks, the new habit can become a lifelong change,” organizers said.
The Mind Body Wellness Challenge website offers information on seven dimensions of wellness, as depicted on the Wellness Wheel: physical, social, emotional, intellectual, environmental, occupational and spiritual. Then, for each dimension, the website offers a number of a ways to enhance your wellness in that dimension.
For example, for physical wellness, eat five to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. For social wellness, call or write to faraway friends or family. For environmental wellness, Ride your bike, walk or use public transportation, instead of driving.
At the conclusion of the challenge, all participants will be invited to a healthy potluck luncheon to celebrate their success towards healthier lifestyles. The luncheon will feature a wellness presentation and raffle prizes, organizers said.
Registration and more information. Employees, retirees and students who sign up are welcome to choose a free gift (pedometer, socks, etc.) by visiting Staff Development and Professional Services Department in the Heitman Staff Learning Center (opposite the South Silo), from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
