Robert Jackman, a distinguished professor of political science, died Oct. 8 after a two-year struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Jackman, the author of four books and dozens of articles in leading journals, was an internationally-renowned scholar in comparative politics, comparative institutions and political behavior. He earned his political science doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in 1972, and came to UC Davis in 1989 after a stint at Michigan State.
Jackman's research was widely recognized, garnering him several awards, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, and research grants from the National Science Foundation.
According to colleagues, the collegial Jackman was "wise" and "generous" when it came to mentoring students and younger faculty. He was especially known for a "dry, self-deprecating wit." Jackman found solace in hobbies involving automotives, antique hand tools and classical music.
A fund has been established in Robert Jackman's memory to support the research activities of graduate students. Contributions may be made to UC Regents and sent to the Robert Jackman Memorial Fund, UC Davis, Department of Political Science #1060, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616.
A memorial will be held for Robert Jackman at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at Stonegate Country Club, 919 Lake Blvd., Davis.
