Memorial service in works for Korean student

The campus is planning to hold a memorial service for a former UC Davis Extension student from South Korea who was found dead Aug. 6 in Yosemite National Park.

Hyun Do Ahn, who had participated in a year-long program on campus, died of multiple blunt force injuries that were accidental in nature, said Gail Sgambellone, assistant coroner/public administrator for Mariposa County.

Scott Gediman of the National Park Service said park employees found the 25-year-old's body in Tenaya Canyon, and it appears that he had fallen.

Ahn was one of 52 Korea University students who had taken courses at UC Davis as part of UC Davis/Korea University Study Abroad Program to improve English language and other academic skills. The students took classes beginning in fall 2004, and Ahn completed his coursework in mid-June.

Ahn set off to hike in Yosemite National Park before visiting friends in various cities. He was reported missing after he did not use his reservation for a return flight to South Korea July 21.

The family was to hold a private service at a Fresno funeral home this week. When information about the UC Davis memorial service becomes available, it will be posted at http://www.news.ucdavis.edu/.
