Donald Strong, professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis, can comment on the current debate over "intelligent design." Evolution is one of the premier scientific theories, alongside gravity and magnetism, and has passed multiple independent tests that could have refuted it, Strong says. The evidence from our genes, from the fossil record and from the nested relationships between living things are just three examples successfully predicted by the theory of evolution by natural selection. There is no real debate among scientists about the success of the theory of evolution and its central place in science. In contrast, "intelligent design" is not a scientific theory and has no real support among scientists. Instead, Strong says, it is an attempt to undermine scientific explanations for the world, in favor of religious, theistic explanations, Strong said.
