May 11, Wednesday -- The Middle East/South Asia Studies Program launches its Faris Saeed Lecture Series in Arab Studies with both UC Davis and guest scholars serving as panel speakers. The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Technocultural Studies Building on the UC Davis campus; it is free and open to the public. Speakers and their topics: Paul Amar, associate professor of global and international studies at UC Santa Barbara, "The Radical Parahuman Subjects of Egypt's Revolution: New Perspectives on the Youth Movements, Police-Military Contentions and Sexualized Labor Behind The Arab Spring"; Beshara Doumani, professor of history, UC Berkeley, "'The People Want': Historical Reflection on the Slogan of the Arab Revolutions"; Susan Miller, associate professor of history, UC Davis, "Libya: Failed Revolution?" The lecture series is made possible with a $250,000 grant by Faris Saeed, a Dubai resident who supports a number of programs in the UC Davis Middle East/South Asia Studies Program.
