The film Marriage Iranian Style and a lecture to go with it are planned Dec. 3 in the Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The program is open to the community.

The Mondavi Center's Web site describes the film as a romantic comedy -- a genre mostly forgotten in Iranian cinema -- about the marriage of an Iranian girl and a young American and the upheaval that the union brings into a family that is desperately trying to honor tradition, while welcoming modern changes into their home and family.

The screening is scheduled for 7 p.m. The program is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. with a talk by Minoo Moallem, professor of gender and women's studies at UC Berkeley. Her topic: "Desiring the Other: Cultural Encounters and Romantic Comedy."

She is the author of Between Warrior Brother and Veiled Sister: Islamic Fundamentalism and the Politics of Patriarchy in Iran.

Her brother Ali Moallem produced Marriage Iranian Style. The film is in Farsi with English subtitles.
