A lyrical, jazzy tribute to artist Wayne Thiebaud

This music's for you, Wayne Thiebaud. He is the UC Davis art professor emeritus famed for his paintings of cream cakes, pies, candy apples and the like, as well as landscapes focusing on San Francisco's hills and the Sacramento Valley's farmland.

The lyrical, jazzy 20-minute-long composition, by conductor, composer and pianist Andre Previn, was commissioned by the Sacramento Philharmonic to craft a work in Thiebaud's honor. That work, Night Thoughts, is set for debut during concerts scheduled at 8 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Sacramento Community Center and 3 p.m. Oct. 15 at Mondavi Center on campus.

Thiebaud is due to attend both performances. And, for the Mondavi concert, a preconcert lecture is set for 2 p.m.

Also on the philharmonic program: Dvorak's Carnival Overture, op. 92; Ravel's La Valse; and Haydn's Symphony No. 96, D major.
