LETTERS: Ranking disparity?

Dear Editor:

“Campuses sweep top spots in college rankings: An open letter from President Mark G. Yudof.”

This appeared on the Web page of the UC Office of the President on Sept. 2. The Washington Monthly’s college rankings place six of the UC campuses in the top 25 universities in the nation. Berkeley ranked first, UC San Diego ranked second, UCLA ranked third, UC Davis ranked tenth, UC Riverside ranked 16th and UC Santa Barbara ranked 21st.

Also on the same Web page is a link to the UC’s 2009 Accountability Report. On page 208, UC campus libraries are ranked nationally with UC Davis ranked 64th in the nation. The Washington Monthly must not consider libraries to be of significance to the institutions they support. Otherwise how could UC Davis rank 10th in college rankings and 64th in ranking by the Association of Research Libraries?
