This column offers a sampling of honors recently awarded to UC Davis faculty, staff and units:

Linda Harris, a Cooperative Extension food microbiologist in the Department of Food Science and Technology and associate director of the UC Davis-based Western Institute for Food Safety and Security, was recently selected to receive the Frozen Food Foundations’ 2010 Freezing Research Award. The honor, which will be presented in August during the annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection in Anaheim, recognizes Harris’ contributions to the field of research involving food safety and frozen food. The Frozen Food Foundation is an affiliate of the American Frozen Food Institute and promotes scientific research, public awareness and industry education on the nutritional and safety attributes of frozen foods.

Taraneh Emam, a first-year graduate student working with Assistant Professor and ecologist Valerie Eviner, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Emam’s research focuses on the relationship between invasive plants and soil biotic communities. The prestigious award, based on her outstanding abilities, accomplishments and potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the U.S. science enterprise, will fully support her studies for three years.

The works of Annabeth Rosen, the Robert Arneson Chair of Ceramic Art, are on exhibition at the Fleisher/Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia from March 31 to May 1.

Charles Berger, professor of communication, is one of the editors of the book, Handbook of Communication Science, Second Edition (Sage Publications, 2010).

Monique Borgerhoff Mulder, professor of anthropology, is one of the authors of the book, The Intergenerational Transmission of Wealth and the Dynamics of Inequality in Pre-Modern Societies (Science, 2009).

Vaidehi Ramanathan, professor of linguistics, is the author of the book, Bodies and Language: Health, Ailments, Disabilities (Multilngual Matters, 2009).

Gail Goodman, distinguished professor of psychology, is one of the editors of Children as Victims, Witnesses, and Offenders: Psychological Science and the Law (Guilford, 2009).
