• State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell has appointed Harold Levine, dean of the School of Education, and senior Brian McInnis to serve on the Superintendent's California P-16 Council. The council, which has more than 40 members, has been charged with the development of strategies to improve education for California students from preschool through college. Levine, who has been dean of the education school since 2001, also serves on the Department of Education's Reading First Advisory Panel and a working group on education technology. McInnis, of San Anselmo, is double majoring in economics and history.

  • Ralph deVere White, director of the UC Davis Cancer Center, has been named president-elect of the Society of Urologic Oncology, the leading organization dedicated to developing new treatment strategies for urologic cancers. DeVere White is professor and chair of urology and associate dean for cancer programs at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center. He is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters and serves on the editorial boards of six scientific journals. His research focuses on the genetic mistakes that give rise to prostate cancer.
  • Desmond Jolly, a Cooperative Extension economist in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, has been awarded the 2005 Outstanding Black Agricultural Economist Award by the Committee on the Opportunities and Status of Blacks in Agricultural Economics. The organization, a committee of the American Agricultural Economics Association, presented the award to Jolly on July 26 in Providence, R.I. The Outstanding Black Agricultural Economist Award honors economists who have made exceptional contributions in teaching and research. Since 1995, Jolly has served as director of the statewide UC Small Farm Program and Small Farm Center.
  • The UC Davis Breastfeeding Support Program was awarded the Yolo County Mother-baby-friendly workplace award. The award was presented Aug. 31 in Davis. The program aims to increase awareness among mothers and employers that breastfeeding and work are compatible.
