Keeping pet populations in check

Campus veterinarians and staff spayed or neutered hundreds of pets Feb. 25 as part of Spay Day, left, an annual event held by the Sacramento Area Animal Coalition and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The laboratory facility at the School of Veterinary Medicine was one of 16 sites providing surgical procedures in Sacramento, Yolo and Placer counties. Nearly 300 volunteer faculty, staff and students assisted in the effort. Low-income families making $35,000 or less received spay-neuter surgeries for a co-pay of $20 — services that typically cost anywhere from $150 to $300.
