April 21, Thursday -- Author and journalist Adam Hochschild will present "12 Men in a Printing Shop, May 22, 1787: The Birth of a Human Rights Movement." The talk is based on his newest book, "Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire's Slaves," which tells the story of a small group of Englishmen who promoted the radical notion that slavery in the British Empire was wrong. Hochschild, co-founder of the magazine "Mother Jones," is a professor of journalism at UC Berkeley. His previous books include "King Leopold's Ghost," awarded the 1998 California Book Award's gold medal for nonfiction. The talk will take place noon-1 p.m. in the AGR Room of the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. The Department of History and the African Studies Committee of the Program in African American and African Studies are sponsoring the visit.
