The UC Davis Jazz Band, aka the Wednesday Night Big Band, plans to round out the year in “phat” style, with a Phat Band Jazz Party. The concert is set for 8 p.m. May 9 in the Wyatt Pavilion Theatre. The Synechtoche Sextet will open the show, according to a music department news release. The program features the music of Grammy-winning composer-arranger Gordon Goodwin. The news release states: “The music is a powerful, hot, contemporary big band mix of jazz, blues, funk and rock, full of twists and surprises: from a swinging rendition of Bach’s Two-Part Invention in D Minor to the Afro-Cuban grooves of Mueva los Huesos, from the dark and mysterious Whodunnit? to the hard-driving beats of The Jazz Police.” Also on the music department calendar: a concert by the Early Music Ensemble, 8 p.m. May 13, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorne Lane, Davis. The program was not available.
