IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING

Aggie head baseball coach Rex Peters, arms crossed, chats with his Pepperdine counterpart Steve Rodriguez and umpires before a Feb. 27 game in which 11th-ranked Pepperdine topped UC Davis, 7-2. On Feb. 19, Peters appeared on Jim Rome’s national sports talk show as the sixth “Rex” in Rome’s attempt to see how many days in a row he could interview people with the name Rex. With Rome, Peters discussed his own professional career and Aggie baseball.

Last year, UC Davis reached the NCAA Tournament in its first season of Division I eligibility. “That’s a huge step,” Peters told Rome. “We have a lot more room for growth and hopefully we can continue to make strides.” This year’s team, which opened the season Feb. 20, is built around offense. Many of last year’s pitchers graduated or were drafted — 10 Aggies are now playing in the minor leagues.
