ID cards and rallies

On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security held a national town hall meeting on the federal REAL ID Act at Freeborn Hall. On the far left, Mathew Van Gundy, a doctoral student in computer science, asks a question about the legislation. The Real ID Act requires every state to recertify holders of driver's licenses and identification cards over a five-year period beginning in May 2008. Elsewhere on campus on the same day, students and campus community members staged protests on the war in Iraq, civil rights, UC labor issues, immigration and the environment. "I share many of the concerns that prompted Tuesday's demonstrations on behalf of the campus's food service workers," said Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef. "We are continuing to make very real efforts to resolve these complex issues, particularly regarding affordable health care."
