Keith Tipton, an irrigation specialist, helps to repair the broken water main caused by a fallen tree Sept. 23 on Putah Creek Lodge Drive. The campus was battered by a heavy windstorm that day, and damage included a power outage throughout all campus buildings south of interstate 80. In Meyer Hall, soot from wildfires hindered the building’s ventilation system and some employees were advised to go home. All campus groundskeeping crew staff were mobilized to clear fallen trees and other debris. Locally, firefighters battled two wind-driven grass fires in south Davis. Across Yolo County, the storm fueled wildfires that burned 11,000 acres, destroyed three homes, and killed or injured large numbers of farm animals. John Madigan of UC Davis’ Veterinary Emergency Response team told the Woodland Daily Democrat about 400 sheep would be lost in the next two weeks.
