Hospital Child Abduction Suspect Arrested

UC Davis police late Monday night issued an Amber Alert and then successfully apprehended the suspect in a parental abduction from the pediatric ward of the UC Davis Children's Hospital.

Jason Bentson, 23, of South Lake Tahoe, was arrested for the kidnapping of his daughter, 20-month-old Madeline Bentson. Jason Bentson is suspected of removing a security bracelet from his daughter before taking her from the hospital at about 9 p.m. At 11:30 p.m., he was located at a Highway 50 chain control stop in Camino by El Dorado County sheriff's deputies and taken into custody.

Nursing staff initiated a "Code Rainbow" alert for the missing child, and then an Amber Alert was issued for the father and his vehicle. Madeline Bentson had been in the custody of El Dorado County child protective services while undergoing treatment at the children's hospital.

Madeline Bentson was safely returned to the UC Davis Children's Hospital early Tuesday morning, where she will be treated before being released to authorities.
