Horse Barn's annual production sale June 19

The UC Davis Horse Barn, a unit of the Department of Animal Science, is putting 16 horses and mules up for auction in the 2010 production sale. The event is held annually in support of the Equine Teaching Program.

This year’s sale is scheduled for June 19 at the Horse Barn, across from Meyer Hall on La Rue Road. People are invited to preview the sale animals starting at 3:30 p.m. A barbecue is set to begin at 4:30, and the auction begins at 6.

The horse and mule auction is conducted live; a silent auction is held for donated items.

The sale catalog lists nine horses and four mules, all weanlings and yearlings, all bred, raised and trained on campus, with students doing the training.

The yearlings have been trained in the following: tie, stand to be groomed and clipped, stand for the farrier, bathe, round pen, walk on the hot walker, and trailer. In addition, the yearlings have been exposed to large crowds, large machinery and diverse environments.

The other three sale animals are older horses, not bred at UC Davis but trained here.
