Updated 5:30 p.m. April 30: The UC Walks organizers announced Drew Avenue in Davis will not be a meet-up place for a group walk May 1.
UC Davis will participate this week in the systemwide UC Walks, now in its 10th year — an event that encourages faculty, staff and retirees to take time out of their day to walk, in support of wellness and an active lifestyle.
Walks are held on general campuses and at health systems, as well as the Office of the President and other UC locations, with wellness programs at each site organizing their walks in partnership with the Systemwide Well-Being Initiative.
Nearly 800 people participated in Davis campus and UC Davis Health walks last year, among more than 9,000 people total around the system — a 32 percent increase over 2017 and more than double the participation of the inaugural event in 2010.
UC Walks is held around this time every year, with each campus and health system choosing its own walk date. For 2019, the Davis campus walk date is Wednesday (May 1) and the UC Davis Health campus walk date is Thursday (May 2).
All you need to do is show up — no preregistration required. Thirty-minute walks will start at noon, but the organizers advise: Get there early if you want a shot at free T-shirts (available while supplies last) and to sign in for prize drawings, and, equally important, to warm up.
Here are the meeting places:
Wednesday, May 1: Davis
- Mrak Hall — north side
- Health Sciences District (including veterinary medicine) — patio area of Tupper Hall
- Quad — near the hammocks on the east side
- Cousteau Place — table in the cul-de-sac
