Good news all the way around for the campus community regarding two students who were in Haiti during the 7.0-magnitude earthquake Jan. 12 and a visiting scholar who made his way back to Haiti after the quake.

Starry Sprenkle, a doctoral student in ecology, remains in Haiti with her husband, Erlantz Hyppolite, and their 20-month-old daughter, Jasmine. All survived the quake unharmed.

Tony Bernardin, a doctoral student in computer science, had been in Haiti visiting his family, according to geology professor Louise Kellogg, who noted: “I’m happy to say that several of us have heard from Tony, who reports that he and his family are safe.”

In a Jan. 18 posting on his Facebook page, Bernardin reported that he “made it back to Davis. Took an extended hot shower. ... I will now go and pass out for however long it takes.”

Jean-Marc Francois-Pierre, a Humphrey Fellow, is back in Haiti, where he reunited with his new wife and her family.

“Their house had collapsed but they were alive,” said Paul Marcotte, co-director of the campus’s Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program. “He is now finding a safe place for them.”
