Grad studies dean, research vice chancellor searches under way

The campus is recruiting for two key academic leadership positions -- dean of graduate studies and vice chancellor for research.

Initial screenings for both positions are expected to begin early in winter quarter. Interviews for finalists may start in late winter quarter or the early spring quarter.

The current terms of Jeffery Gibeling, dean of graduate studies, and Barry Klein, vice chancellor for research, both end in June 2005. The starting date for the new terms is July 1, 2005, or as negotiated.

"We seek candidates with the vision and energy to build upon our foundation as a research university recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of its graduate programs and research, scholarly, and creative activity," said Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef.

The dean of graduate studies plays a lead role in ensuring the quality of UC Davis' graduate academic programs while encouraging the development of new degree programs, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and interdepartmental graduate groups. The dean of graduate studies search committee includes Vanderhoef, Virginia Hinshaw, the provost and executive vice chancellor; Judy Erwin, a graduate assistant in human and community development; Caren Kaplan, associate professor for women and gender studies; Winston Ko, dean of the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences; Robert Rice, a professor in environmental toxicology; Maureen Stanton, a professor in evolution and ecology; Alan Taylor, a professor in history; Anthony Wexler, a professor in mechanical and aeronautical engineering; Kelly Comfort, a doctoral student in comparative literature; and Lisa Gough, an alumna and editor for the Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program.

The vice chancellor for research search committee includes Vanderhoef, Hinshaw, Nader Bagheri, an alumnus and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the California Maritime Academy; Steven Blevins, a doctoral student in English; Deena Bynoe, assistant director of finance and administration at McClellan Nuclear Radiation Center; Adela de la Torre, a professor in Chicana/o Studies; Paul FitzGerald, a professor in cell biology and human anatomy; Karen McDonald, associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Engineering; Ted Molinski, a professor in the Department of Chemistry; Alan Olmstead, director of the Institute of Governmental Affairs; Neal Van Alfen, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Catherine VandeVoort, associate adjunct professor in reproductive biology; and Tilahun Yilma, a professor in virology.
