The role of nutrition in childen's health around the world will be discussed by David Alnwick, director of health for UNICEF, when he visits UC Davis next week to collaborate with the campus's highly respected international nutrition program and to speak in the Gifford Distinguished Speaker Series on Population Issues.
Alnwick will talk about the "State of the World's Children, 1998: A Focus on Nutrition" during his public lecture at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the University Club.
He will highlight the findings of UNICEF's annual report on the global status of children, detailing the magnitude of the annual loss of human life and economic potential due to malnutrition and outlining steps being taken to improve the situation.
A nutritionist who graduated from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Alnwick previously served in Kenya as a UNICEF nutrition adviser for eastern and southern Africa. His campus visit is hosted by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Program in International Nutrition, which coordinates research training and technical assistance activities to address human nutritional problems of low-income countries.
The Gifford Distinguished Speaker Series was created by a gift from John and Mary Lou Gifford to encourage research collaborations in global population issues.
