The School of Medicine’s Kenya Project is selling tickets for its second annual Wine and Art Auction, a fundraiser for the project’s work in Africa. The auction will be part of a 1950s and ’60s dance party, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20.

Medicos: The Kenya Project, established in 2007, is an exchange program involving the UC Davis and University of Nairobi medical schools. Each year UC Davis sends a team of second-year students to Kenya for a month, usually mid-May to mid-June, to work in clinics, learn more about public health issues in that medically underserved country, and conduct research on issues affecting community and international health.

UC Davis physicians, including Neil Flynn, who founded Medicos: The Kenya Project and serves as its medical director, accompany the students.

The UC Davis delegation assists in providing free care to the people of urban slums and rural villages, especially women and children who have been affected by AIDS and the AIDS-causing human immunodeficiency virus. The UC Davis team works at medical camps in conjunction with University of Nairobi students and physicians, other health care professional in Kenya, and community members.

Then, in the fall, the UC Davis School of Medicine hosts a delegation from Kenya for a month.

“Through education, collaboration and hands-on experience, we will create future physician-leaders prepared to actively face the global challenges of the 21st century,” reads the Kenya Project mission statement. Exhibitions during the auction party will showcase the project’s work, the organizers said.

The party is scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. at the California Auto Museum, 2200 Front St., Sacramento. The program includes DJ music, a raffle and tours of the museum.

The auction is 100 percent silent, mostly featuring arts and crafts from Kenya. The organizers said hors d’oeuvres will be served, and additional food items will be available for purchase.
