Marye Anne Fox was on Monday officially appointed the seventh chancellor of UC San Diego by the UC regents.
The regents appointed Fox to the post effective Aug. 16, approving a salary of $350,000. Fox replaces Robert Dynes, who became UC president in October.
Fox, 56, has served as chancellor of North Carolina State University since 1998 and previously was vice president for research at the University of Texas at Austin. She has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Science and is a member of President Bush's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
Fox said she was eager to begin working at UC San Diego. "UCSD is an exciting, innovative global institution that is continually setting new standards of excellence and entrepreneurship."
She holds a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame College, a master's from Cleveland State University, and a doctorate from Dartmouth.
At North Carolina, Fox presided over major building and fundraising campaigns and the development of a public-private research center called Centennial Campus. The campus saw increases in research spending, patent awards, and private donations.
Fox has published extensively in chemistry and science policy and has received numerous teaching awards, including the national Monie Ferst Award for mentoring graduate students.
She has served on the Executive Committee of the National Academy of Sciences, has been elected to the American Philosophical Society and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Fox also co-chairs the National Research Council's Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable and is chair of the National Association of Land Grant Colleges and Universities' Commission on Food, Environment, and Renewable Resources.
She is the first woman appointed permanent chancellor of UC San Diego. The search committee reviewed some 50 applicants, drawn from a pool of more than 300 candidates.
