Forum on History of the Taliban, Central Asia

* Oct. 17, Wednesday -- In a second UC Davis forum addressing implications of the Sept. 11 attacks, two UC Davis professors will give historical perspectives for the region. Speakers include Barbara Metcalf, a leading authority on the history of the Taliban. She will discuss Islamic movements and the Taliban, as well as the importance of support for the Taliban and for Arab-Afghans, such as Osama bin Laden, in internal politics in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Daniel Brower, author of "The World in the Twentieth Century: The Age of Global War and Revolution" and a scholar of Russian colonialism in Central Asia, will talk about the history of "Inner Asia." The forum, sponsored by the Institute of Governmental Affairs and the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, will take place noon-1:15 p.m. in the IGA Reading Room, 360 Shields Library on the UC Davis campus.
