Just in time for Picnic Day, the Olive Center has added roasted garlic olive oil to the UC Davis line of extra-virgin olive oils. Tastings — of the new oil and the regular olive oils, Silo and Gunrock — are scheduled on Picnic Day and the day before.

Friday (April 20) — 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., near the main checkout in the UC Davis Store in the Memorial Union.

Saturday, Picnic Day (April 21) — 10 a.m.-3 p.m., on the Freeborn Hall courtyard outside the UC Davis Store at the Memorial Union (north side).

The new garlic oil is made from oil donated by Corto Olive of Lodi and flavored with roasted garlic oil.

“It’s a variation that a lot of people enjoy with cooking or with finishing food off, where you want a garlic flavor,” said Dan Flynn, executive director of the Olive Center, who noted that the center had received many requests for garlic oil.

UC Davis olive oil ($12 per 250-mililiter bottle) is available at the main UC Davis Store in the Memorial Union, plus these other UC Davis Stores: South Silo, Veterinary (Medical Science Building 1B) and Pro Shop (Activities and Recreation Center) on the main campus, Downtown (630 Second St., at F Street) and Sacramento (2270 Stockton Blvd.). The olive oils also are available via the UC Davis Stores website (the roasted garlic olive oil will not be available online until next week).

First Wednesday Wine Flight

The first Wednesday of the month, May 2, brings the First Wednesday Wine Flight, this month featuring Wente Vineyards.

The wine tastings are sponsored by the Gunrock Pub and the Vinetage Aggies Wine Club and held at the pub (on the south side of the Silo), from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

“Named American Winery of the Year for 2011 by Wine Enthusiast, Wente Vineyards is this country’s oldest, continuously operated family-owned, estate grown, and sustainably farmed winery,” wine flight organizers said. “For five generations, the Wente family has been dedicated to the art of winemaking and the philosophy that the quality of the wine originates in the vineyard. “

“Come and experience the legacy of Wente wines with us!”

The cost is $10, and no reservations are needed. To reserve a table, purchase tickets in advance or schedule private tastings, call the Gunrock Pub, (530) 752-6262.
