FOOD, ETC.: Free herbs for Thanksgiving

FREE HERBS: The Good Life Garden is inviting the campus community to another free herb harvest — this one on Nov. 19, a week before Thanksgiving.

With the giveaway, the people who tend the garden said they are giving thanks "to all our past, present and future herb harvest attendees!"

"We enjoy having you out in the garden and hope that you'll harvest some herbs to enjoy at your Thanksgiving meals," said Katie Hetrick, communications manager for Grounds and Landscape Services.

People are welcome to come by any time from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to harvest any type of herb that is growing in the garden — including rosemary, marjoram, lavender, sage, thyme, chives and mint.

Hetrick said the Good Life Garden gardener, Arlene Kennedy, will be available in the garden through the day to answer questions about the different herbs and the harvesting process, and to direct people to the correct plants.

"We ask that no one remove entire plants or remove more than half of the leaves or flowers from any particular plant," Hetrick said.

If you are coming, bring scissors or pruning shears, and a bag to hold your herbs. Also, if you do not have a refrigerator to keep them in for the day, bring some paper towels — so you can wet the towels and put them in the bag with the herbs.

And Hetrick gives this reminder: Be sure to wash all of the herbs before using.

Hetrick said the organizers like to have an idea of how many people are coming, so, if you are interested, please RSVP to goodlifegarden@ucdavis.edu. The Good Life Garden sits amid the buildings of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science on Old Davis Road. Directions can be found here.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT WINE FLIGHT: European Holiday Traditions. $10, no reservations needed. 5-6:30 p.m. Dec. 2, Gunrock Pub, Silo. (Gunrock Pub and the Cal Aggie Alumni Association’s Vintage Aggies Wine Club)
