FITNESS: On the move!; Try Before You Buy; Nordic walking; 'Sampler' class'

ON THE MOVE! Step right up! Aggies on the Move has a deal or two for you.

All you need to do is start walking, by yourself, with your co-workers or on a team. Your exercise efforts from October through June can bring you better health and cool incentives.

For example: String together 250,000 steps and you will get an Aggies on the Move T-shirt and a raffle ticket. A half-million steps will get you an aqua clip (to attach a water bottle to your waistband) or lip balm, plus a raffle ticket; and 750,000 steps will get you socks or a visor and a raffle ticket. You will receive another raffle ticket for every additional 250,000 steps.

Drawings are planned monthly for Nike iPod Sports Kits, heart rate monitors and Big 5 gift certificates, and quarterly for $100 gift cards to Fleet Feet.

To qualify for incentives, you need to be registered -- and you can do that in Davis (Fitness and Wellness Center at the Activities and Recreation Center) or Sacramento (Human Resources, 2200 Ticon III). For $5, you get a pedometer and a logbook.

The fall quarter program also includes a Team Challenge, an eight-week event: Oct. 13 to Dec. 5. The winning team wins possession of the perpetual plaque, and members of the winning team receive $10 gift cards. To register, send an e-mail to fitwell@campusrec.ucdavis.edu.

Looking for people to walk with? Try one of the group walks scheduled for the fall quarter.

All group walks are scheduled for 12:15 p.m. after new-member registration at noon. All group walk participants are eligible for raffle prizes.

The group walk locations and dates:

-- Research Park, breezeway between UC Davis Extension and the University Services Building in south Davis. Tuesdays, Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 9.

-- Memorial Union, flagpole on the south side. Wednesdays, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

-- Mrak Hall, south entrance. Thursdays, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.

-- UC Davis Health System, main entrance to the hospital. Wednesdays, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10.

-- UC Davis Health System, Ambulatory Care Center parking entrance. Wednesdays, Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2.

TRY THE ARC: The Activities and Recreation Center is once again running its Try Before You Buy event, when free trial memberships are available to all students, faculty, staff, alumni and retirees. Access is provided to all equipment and resources, including group exercise, and dance and martial arts classes. Try Before You Buy runs through Oct. 3.

NORDIC WALKING: This regimen combines walking and cross-country skiing. Information sessions are scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. Sept. 30 (Pavilion Special Events Room) and from 12:05 to 12:50 p.m. Oct. 1 (meet at the Fitness and Wellness Center in the ARC). 'SAMPLER' CLASS: Campus Recreation announced a free "sampler" class to introduce the ARC's group exercise classes, including yoga, pilates, cycling, BOSU (Both Sides Up) and strength. The class is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 30 in Freeborn Hall. Participants are advised to wear loose clothing.
