Fire-resistance Demonstration

* Sept. 11, Tuesday -- Researchers will set fire to roofs, walls, windows and decks to compare the fire-resistant qualities of various commercially available building materials during the annual open house of the University of California's Forest Products Laboratory in Richmond. The event will last from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.. It is planned in coordination with the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Office of Emergency Services. Other topics for the day will include fire-safe buildings and gardens, earthquake performance, wood-destroying insects and fungi, and what to do with wood from trees that succumb to sudden oak death.
