What: A 10-year dispute over water rights and environmental health in Putah Creek has been resolved, and the parties (including UC Davis, Putah Creek Council, the city of Davis and the water agencies serving Solano County cities and growers) will release details of the new agreement in a ceremony at the Putah Diversion Dam.
When: 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 24
Where: Putah Diversion Dam, at the eastern end of Lake Solano
Visuals: Principals to the agreement will make short remarks at a lectern on the apron of the dam, with a beautiful backdrop of Lake Solano and its surrounding hills and creekside habitat. Then they will pour lake water into the canal that carries water to growers and cities and into Putah Creek. An aquarium of the unique native fish that live in the creek will be at the site.
Background: The new accord resolves legal efforts against the Solano County Water Agency and others that were begun in 1990 by the environmental group Putah Creek Council and joined in 1993 by UC Davis and the city of Davis. Falling stream levels during the 1987-92 drought, the region's worst on record, triggered the dispute. The Putah Creek Council claimed that the reduced flow in the summers of 1989 and 1990 in particular had seriously threatened the health of the creek's native fish. In 1996, a Sacramento Superior Court judge ruled that more water should be released from the Solano Project for lower Putah Creek. The new agreement was worked out before an appeal was to be heard. Its terms should benefit native fish while also addressing water needs of Solano County farmers and cities.
