Speaker, Feb. 18: Global Warming, Land Use and Transportation Modeling

At UC Davis' Tahoe research center, Robert Johnston, UC Davis professor emeritus of environmental science and policy, will discuss the role of transportation planning in reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.

Johnston will describe his urban-growth model being used by 20 California counties for land-use, transportation and natural-resource planning. He will also discuss the implications of new California global-warming laws for the Tahoe Basin.

He is a member of the Transportation Research Board's Transportation and Land Development Committee; a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Determination of the State of Practice of Metropolitan Travel Modeling; and a town planning commissioner in Truckee, Calif.

His Feb. 18 talk begins at 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, Nev. A $5 donation is requested; a no-host bar will open at 5:30 p.m.

 

Tahoe Family Event, Feb. 27: SnowFest Science Expo

Also at UC Davis' Tahoe research center, SnowFest 2009 will feature exhibits on snow, water, ice and more. Part of the annual North Lake Tahoe and Truckee SnowFest, the interactive science experiments are planned to be fun and educational for kids ages 6 to 12 and their families.

The Science Expo is hosted by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center in partnership with Lake Tahoe School and Sierra Nevada College.

It takes place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, Nev. It is free and open to the public. Speaker, April 2: Writing 'Two Billion Cars'

Daniel Sperling, director of the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies, will discuss writing his new book, "Two Billion Cars: Driving Toward Sustainability," as part of the University Writing Program's Conversations with Writers series.

Sperling's presentation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on April 2 in Room MUII in the Memorial Union on campus. It is free and open to the public. Copies of Sperling's book will be on sale at the event by the UC Davis Bookstore.
