EMPOWERING WOMEN ...

California State Sen. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, visited campus Feb. 10 for a panel discussion on how women can reshape policy in higher education and politics. Sponsored by the Consortium for Women and Research and with more than 100 people in attendance, the session took place in the University Club and included sociology professor Carole Joffe and law professors Marty West and Angela Onwuachi-Willig. West explained how she and others enlisted Speier several years ago to advocate that the UC bridge the gender gap in faculty. Added West, "We thought the university needed a nudge to take this issue more seriously." A UC alumna, Speier said that while UC has made improvements in the gender gap, "there's a lot of work to be done" on this front. She urged women to be better at promoting themselves, negotiating and speaking up. "I have a T-shirt that reads, 'Well-behaved women don't make history.' "
