For almost 25 years, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers summer workshop in California has given aspiring writers an opportunity to receive feedback, suggestions and advice about their work from successful authors in fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting and poetry. Alex Haley, Amy Tan, Maxine Hong Kingston and Michael Chabon are among the writers who have passed through the program. This summer, UC Davis is co-sponsoring a weeklong workshop Aug. 15-22 on "The Art of the Wild." The program is directed at writers who address themes of wilderness, nature and the environment in their work. Participants were selected after submitting applications with samples of their writing. Among the writers who will be conducting the workshops are Gretel Ehrlich, Gary Snyder and James Welch.
