In English: “Together we can liberate ourselves with education and celebration.”

It’s the theme for La Raza Cultural Days, starting Monday, May 9, and concluding the La Gran Tardeada, Saturday, May 14, on the Quad.

Here are some of the week’s highlights:

• "La raza es politica: representa a nuestra gente” — An open discussion on political issues affecting the Chicana/o-Latina/o community. 4-6 p.m. Monday, May 9, 114 South Hall.

• “Why Are All the Latina/o Students Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” — Having trouble staying true to your culture while trying to bridge to other communities? Come share your experiences and learn about the process of building communities and relationships. 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, Moss Room, Memorial Union.

• Women of Color Poetry Night — Sharing the struggles, accomplishments and identities of colored women. Be part of the audience, and feel free to participate on stage. 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, Griffin Lounge, MU.

• Chicano/a Studies Symposium: “Seguimos la lucha por la educacion” (“Continuing the Struggle for Our Education”) — Exploring current issues in Chicana/o studies. Panel discussion (with faculty members), plus speakers on diverse struggles in education within the raza community. The symposium will be accompanied by the Magdalena Mora Art Exhibit, an homage by student and community artists to the great Chicana activist of the past. Noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, MU II.

• Noche de Estrellas — A celebration of Chicana/o-Latina/o talents, with performances by UC Davis students and other people from around the region. 7-10 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, Freeborn Hall.

• 15th annual Youth Conference — For high school students from around the region, exposing them to the possibilities of higher education. With a keynote speaker and a discussion of the issues surrounding Chicana/o-Latina/o access to universities. 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, May 12, Technocultural Studies Building, King Lounge and MU II.

• Latin Dance 101 — Instruction in a different dance every year. The punta is the dance for 2011. 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 13, Main Lounge, Tercero Residential Area.

• Cuauhtémoc Run — 5-kilometer or 10-kilometer, run or walk, around the arboretum. Starting near the Music Building, behind Mrak Hall. 7 a.m. Saturday, May 14.

• La Gran Tardeada — Including a children’s fair and health fair, entertainment and food. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 14, Quad.
