CRIMSON CHALLENGE ...

Michael Buck, right, chair of Staff Assembly, gets ready to donate blood in October as Patricia Wong from the blood bank prepares a machine that takes the blood and separates out the plasma and platelets and gives the whole blood back. Buck, who has an unusually high platelet count, can donate blood every two weeks and has made 400 blood donations in the amount of 50 gallons since 1989 when he first gave blood as a UC Davis student. He urges employees to consider giving blood at the ASUCD blood drive from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 16-17 at Freeborn Hall. "I am challenging the staff to match my 400 donations at the fall blood drive," said Buck. "Our blood drive is the largest in the area, but most of the donations come from students." The UC Davis blood drives typically collect about 3,400 pints of blood a year, said Angela Tarricone of Blood Source. "These contributions help us during critical times of the year, especially with the upcoming holidays," she added. Participants will receive a free T-shirt.
