UC Davis graduate-turned-TV chef Martin Yan is due on campus next week to preview the Aggie Adventures trip to China that he is leading next year.

The 10-day tour is officially called “Hidden China: A Culinary and Cultural Expedition,” designed by Yan himself.

Travelers will “experience the best Cantonese cuisine in China while learning the history and culture of these extraordinary destinations,” according to Aggie Adventures, a program of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.

The itinerary includes a stop at the Martin Yan Culinary Arts Center in Shenzhen, plus visits to Hong Kong, Panyu, Guangzhou and Lijang.

The free information session is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. Organizers said refreshments will include Vintage Aggies wine. Space is limited, and people interested in attending are asked to make reservations (see below).

The China trip is scheduled for May 13 to 23. Prices: $3,895 per person double or triple occupancy, or $4,895 per person single occupancy — including airfare to and from San Francisco, ground transportation, hotel accommodations, meals and local tours.

Yan received two UC Davis degrees: a bachelor’s in 1973 and a Master of Science in food science in 1977. The next year he started his television show Yan Can Cook, focusing on Chinese food. He has since hosted some 3,000 cooking shows that have been on TV worldwide.

He has taught at the Culinary Institute of America, California Culinary Academy and the Chinese Cuisine Institute in Hong Kong. He founded the Yan Can Cooking School in California in 1985 and the Martin Yan Culinary Arts Center in 2007.
